In our skin clinic, once we get someone’s acne cleared we are often asked how to clear away any acne marks that have been left behind to remind us of what once was. Acne marks, otherwise known as post inflammatory erythema (PIE) are red or dark marks that occur on the skin after a breakout, and can be the result of picking or squeezing any acne lesions. Acne marks can take up to six months to clear, and can easily be just as trying as acne, which is why it’s important to remember to not pick or squeeze any breakouts while you have them. Luckily for you, we are going to cover how to help fade your acne marks without any lasers or harsh prescription products.
First things first – sunscreen. Yes, you always need sunscreen if it’s sunny or if it’s cloudy, if you’re going out for five minutes or five hours. We’ve talked about this before on the blog, and most of you know that wearing sunscreen everyday protects us from risk of skin cancer, aging, and sun damage. With knowing that, you should be able to connect the dots that wearing sunscreen is of the utmost importance when trying to clear up any of your acne marks. The minute that any damaged skin becomes exposed to the sun, it holds on to that pigment and it comes harder than ever to reverse that damage. Daily, you need to use an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every hour. Most people will apply sunscreen everyday and forget the most important step, reapplying! Keep that skin protected throughout the day. We recommend our UV Daily 30 SPF, or the UV SILK40.
A less common active ingredient that will help to fade your acne marks would be Arbutin. Arbutin is a tyrosinase inhibitor, meaning it will help to stop any hyperpigmentation from forming in the skin and fade existing dark marks. A product that we recommend with Arbutin would be our Beta Bright Pads, our Beta Bright Pads are also formulated with vitamin C, and mandelic, they pack a huge punch when it comes to helping lighten up any PIE.
As we mentioned before, Vitamin C plays a big role in brightening up the skin. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that when applied topically will brighten, lighten, and tighten the skin and help to fight off any free radical damage. Using a stable, potent vitamin C serum daily will help to improve skin health, and fade any of those pesky acne marks. We love our Dual C serum for this, as it is acne safe and formulated with Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, a form of vitamin C that can penetrate the surface level of the skin and get to the dermis. After you apply your vitamin C serum, using a Niacinamide daily applied to the skin would also be a great candidate when it comes to fading acne marks, since it is wound healing, and promotes a more even toned complexion. Our Nourish RX moisturizer contains niacinamide and will also help to hydrate, and nourish the skin.
Last but most certainly not least, we would always recommend using a retinol serum 2-3 times a week to help speed up cell turnover and promote collagen production within the skin. Retinol is the gold standard of skincare, but should always be introduced gradually into the skin. Make sure that you are using a good quality retinol, and start small or consult with a skin coach today to see how you can benefit from it in your routine.
